Tuberculosis Scare at Sacramento Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Puts Premature Babies at Risk

Eight babies at one Sacramento hospital were exposed to tuberculosis (TB) when a visitor recently entered the hospital with the condition.  An individual with an active case of tuberculosis visited the Methodist Hospital of Sacramento during the week of August 23, 2012. Unaware that he or she was suffering from the malady, the visitor was discovered to be TB-positive on September 3, 2012 when the person went to the hospital’s emergency room for medical assistance, only to find out that TB was the culprit. Now in isolation, the person is receiving treatment.

At the time of the individual’s visit to the hospital, eight babies were being treated in the neonatal intensive care unit, which is specifically designed for either recovery of infants from a premature birth or breathing problems. As a precautionary measure, doctors gave all eight babies antibiotic treatments and plan to follow up with TB tests in six months to determine if any of them are infected. Sacramento County’s Public Health Officer has verified that none of the babies exhibit any TB symptoms and reported that they seem to be doing well. She noted that since the visitor was in the early stages of TB and contact was established in a large room, the likelihood of the disease being contracted by any of the infants was minimal.

Child Injuries Most Often Occur due to a Failure on the Part of a Substitute Caregiver or Doctor

Any time infants suffer, human nature causes us to be sympathetic to both the child and his or her parents. And while in the case of this TB scare it would appear that no one was injured, when a child is injured due to some failure on the part of a substitute caregiver, doctor or other responsible party, the consequences can be both financially and emotionally devastating to child and parent alike.  Fortunately, California law provides for the protection of children and gives them the same legal rights as adults when it comes to a personal injury claim.

Child Injuries Come in a Variety of Forms

Childhood injuries come in a variety of forms, some inconsequential, and others catastrophic.  However, anytime a child is injured due to the negligence of another, they and their family have legal options for receiving compensation for damages through California personal injury laws.  Damages that might be covered for children who have been victims of a personal injury include financial assistance for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Attendant caregiver expenses
  • Prescription expenses
  • Out-of-pocket expenses
  • Therapy expenses
  • Home remodeling expenses to accommodate a child’s mobility needs
  • Lack of ability to provide for themselves as an employed individual
  • Pain and Suffering
  • Other related expenses
